On Saturday, August 12, 2017, Heather Heyer was murdered in cold blood during a peaceful protest of a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, VA. That same weekend, Macabre Americana was in Vermont on a writing and recording retreat. On the way up, bandmates Blake and Lacey penned the song, which the entire group finished and recorded in one sitting.

Seconds before Laura began to sing, at around 2am, John hit record for the final take, just as a giant rainstorm opened up the sky and started to pour down all around the studio. The studio windows were open: if you listen closely, you can hear the rain outside, falling in honor of Heather Heyer and the injured who fell that day, standing up for peace.
